SABI SANDS

An exclusive safari experience

Location:  Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa

Description:
Forming part of the Greater Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sands is arguably one of the best wildlife photographic destinations in Southern Africa, especially when it comes to photographing big cats like leopard. The resident wild population of leopard in this game reserve is unparralled and it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll see these elusive cats frequently when out on game drives. With the Sabi and Sand Rivers running through 65,000 hectares of wild bush, the Sabi Sands is home to the Big-5 including elephant, buffalo, lion, wild dog, hyena and hippo; amongst the 300 bird species one will also find in the area.

Why I love it:
The habitat in the Sabi Sands is so rich that one doesn’t have to travel far to find a mix of incredible game and birds to photograph. There’s literally something exciting around every corner. The experienced trackers and rangers, who live and work in the area daily, also track and find game, adding to the safari experience. This, coupled with private safari vehicles and exclusive willdife sightings, makes it one of my favourite destinations for a photo safari.

It’s always a priviledge to photograph leopard and since they are quite accustomed to the game drive vehicles in this reserve, they have a tendency to carry on what they are doing unpertubed, allowing for incredible time spent photographing them. I just love the giant fig trees along the river streams, the sandy bushveld and rocky outcrops that add to the delight of this wilderness area. This sets the scene for watching animal behaviour in a natural setting and walking away with some incredible images.
